Write an Instagram bio that attracts clients

Want to get clients from Instagram? Your Instagram bio is one of the most essential pieces to make it happen.

Like a lot of online business owners, when I first started using Instagram for my copywriting business I had no clue how to leverage it. It was mostly as a place to share pretty pics of my dinner plate and waste time comparing myself to people with perfectly muscled yoga bodies and mai tai-on-the-beach kind of lifestyles.

Over time I’ve figured out how to grow a community of engaged followers and attract people who want to pay me for my services. (Although I can’t really say I don’t still scroll and envy.)

One of my very first copywriting clients (who turned out to be one of my favorites) actually reached out to me via Instagram to ask about hiring me. And this event was no one-time-only thing.

I’ve booked multiple clients who’ve found me through Insta and many others who were simply impressed with my feed.

Can you book clients through Instagram, too?

Absolutely! You need some strategy (but I promise it’s a piece o’ double-chocolate cake), and you need to put in a little elbow grease (well, thumb grease is more accurate). And you need to start your client-attraction quest with your BIO.

That little paragraph above your feed is more important than you might think, and there’s a specific formula that will guide your ideal peeps right along the trail to hiring you.

In this post, I’m going to outline the sweet BIO formula that’s helped me expand my client base and bring in the bucks (and killer collaboration opportunities, too!).

The Instagram Bio Formula to Attract Clients

The perfect Instagram bio has 3 main components:

1. Your title in the “Name” field

The name field of your Instagram bio is the bolded line at the top – underneath your profile pic.

IG intends it to be a place to put your name (I think in case your handle is something different – like @sparkly_unicorn_87)

As a business owner, your name field needs to tell your ideal clients what you do – using keywords that they might be searching for.

This is an opportunity a lot of people miss to make their accounts searchable.

The more specific and clear you can be – the better.

When your ideal client types those keywords into the search bar of IG – you want your account to pop up.

Good examples of clear, searchable titles include:

  • “Nutritionist for Women”
  • “Launch Copywriter”
  • “Infant Sleep Expert”
  • “Queer Relationship Coach”

These are all things people might be searching for to help them with a specific issue.

2. Who you help & the results you help them achieve

Let your ideal clients know that you’re speaking to them – and tell them why they should care.

Results-focused language gives your people a reason to instantly give an ish about your work and want to explore more.

You can include a full “I help” statement like this:

“I help tired parents get baby to sleep through the night”

OR

You can make it something shorter like this:

“Sell more courses with Facebook ads”

Either way, you know who this is for and the juicy results they can expect.

3. An intentional link

Do yourself a favor and don’t just link to your homepage. Instagram only gives you one clickable link, so use it wisely.

You can either:

1. Link directly to a landing page, application, etc for your freebie or paid offer.

Or

2. Link to a page that includes multiple items (like how to work with you, freebies, etc.) You can create this on your own website (ideal) or use one of the many platforms designed for this purpose (like Linktr.ee)

Whichever you decide, include a call-to-action. in your bio that gives people a reason to click.

Here are some CTA examples:

  • FREE: find high-paying copy clients
  • Free masterclass: Beat the bloat
  • 6-figure Biz Systems enrollment open!

The idea is to entice people to click your bio link and learn more, download your freebie, etc.

BONUS 4. Credibility booster

If you’ve got some kind of baller stat, media feature, or other credential, include that in your bio.

Things like:

  • 0-$1M in 3 years
  • Ft. in Forbes
  • 10 years experience

All add to your credibility and boost your legit-ness (is that a word?)

Put some brags in your Insta bio if you’ve got them.

Instagram Bio examples:

My Instagram bio looked like this when I was first starting out. I grew from about 150 followers to over 3,000 in 3 months back in 2016.

There are a few things here that don’t make sense in the current bios of IG.

1. “Storyteller” isn’t searchable.

2. The email address in the bio is unnecessary. IG has an email function that includes a button in your profile – if you choose to add it.

3. The cutesy “notebook hoarder” thing isn’t useful.

My Instagram bio in 2021 looks like this:

All three essential elements are covered, along with the cred-booster “since 2016” (I’m an old-timer at this stage of the online business game.)

Now go update your Instagram bio

Use these guidelines to make yourself searchable and start calling in those ideal clients with your IG account!
