In this post, I’m sharing 15 things that helped me build my 6-figure copywriting business.

These are ideas, tools, and must-haves that you can swipe and implement in your own copywriting business, whether you’re working toward your first – or next – six figures.

Let’s dive in…

15 things that helped me build a 6-figure copywriting business

1. Building a personal brand

I spent the first 2 years of my business feeling like a “best kept secret.” I was helping other businesses make a LOT of money, but no one knew who I was, so my income wasn’t consistent.

Getting myself and my work “out there” helped me get known and get a lot more clients. It also helped me build an audience that I could later leverage to sell 1-many offers (more on that later.)

2. Making my own marketing a non-negotiable

The trap a lot of copywriters (myself included!) fall into is focusing all their effort on marketing other people’s businesses.

Maybe you market yourself sporadically, but then pause when you’ve got clients to focus on. When I got serious about my own marketing, my revenue got seriously larger.

3. Building relationships

My introverted self struggled with this, but my business succeeded because of the relationships I built.

Referrals, partnerships, and friends who “get it” can do SO MUCH for your business. Don’t be an island. Reach out, connect with other entrepreneurs, and nurture those relationships. It’s one of the best things you can do for growth.

4. Focusing on client results

Building a successful copywriting business is not *just* about writing words and delivering them to the client.

I mean, it can be. But when you get known as someone whose clients get incredible results, you can basically stop marketing. Everyone will want to work with you.

Your name will be the one people think of when someone asks “do you know a copywriter?” You’ll start to attract higher-level clients and they’ll pass your name around to their other successful friends.

5. Selling high-ticket packages

All those awesome client results will give you the cred to raise your rates and start selling high-ticket packages.

I routinely sell $10K+ services and have had clients sign contracts as high as $40K. This obviously allows you to make a lot more money than working for $40 bucks an hour or $200 per blog post.

You also get to take on fewer projects – freeing up time to work on your own business.

6. Streamlining my client experience with Dubsado

Dubsado is an all-in-one software that lets you send and sign contracts electronically, send invoices, accept payment, schedule appointments, and more.

Not only does this create an extremely PRO-looking system for your clients, but it also saves you time and effort on admin.

You get to create templates, set up workflows, and automate a lot of your client experience with Dubsado. It’s a must-have.

7. Beefing up my client contracts

You absolutely need to have professional contracts signed by your clients to protect your time and effort. Make sure your contracts outline everything included in your service (deliverables, revisions, timeline, etc.)

Check out this template from my friend, Sam, made specifically for copywriters.

8. Investing in mentorship & coaching

I tried building solo the first two years of my business, and it hurt my growth immeasurably.

Once I hired a coach, I went from averaging about $1200 a month to hitting a $12,000 sales month in just 90-days.

It may seem like you need to make a certain amount of money before you invest in coaching. But you’ll make more money faster if you take that leap NOW.

9. Copy School by Copyhackers

I get asked a lot about what books I read to get good at copywriting, and the answer is none.

What did (and continues) to help me improve my skills is Copy School. This course (I think it’s a membership now) is the most comprehensive program out there on how to write copy.

You’ll find detailed instruction on every kind of copy you can think of (websites, sales pages, FB ads, emails, etc.) They’re continually adding more to it, so no matter what your niche – Copy School has training to make you the baddest on the block.

10. Building my email list with Convertkit

I wish I would’ve put even more effort into list-building early on in my business. It’s the best way to build an audience, nurture people, and sell.

Convertkit includes everything you need to grow your list – from landing pages to email templates and advanced features like segmentation and automated funnels.

11. Creating more content – but spending less time on social media

Instagram has been a big part of my marketing, relationship-building, and sales process – but it can also be a wildly huge time suck if you’re not careful.

The faster you can shift your relationship with social media and become a *creator* instead of a *consumer*, the better for business it’ll be.

12. Hiring a VA

Outsourcing. It’s incredible, y’all. The first person I hired was a VA to schedule my social media content and emails. That little bit of support was life-changing.

Eventually, I hired help with client support, inbox management, accounting and bookkeeping, and more. I even hired another copywriter to rewrite one of my own sales pages after I’d been putting it off for over a year.

You don’t need a ton of money to get started. A couple hundred bucks a month can buy you a LOT of your bandwidth back.

13. Working on my mindset

This should’ve been at the top of the list, but one of the most essential things I did to grow my copywriting business was to work on becoming the person I needed to BE to make it happen.

In the beginning, I was afraid to show up online, timid on sales calls, and generally lacking confidence in myself. That mindset cost me a lot of opportunities early on.

The truth is – Confidence is the reason someone with half the skill as you is making 10X the money. Do whatever you have to to boost your confidence – it’s essential.

14. Saying no

I learned pretty quickly that not every client is worth it. Not every opportunity is a good one.

When you say yes to a project – even though you know it’s going to be a hassle – you eliminate space for something better. You drain yourself energetically, and that’s a biz killer.

The faster you get comfortable saying NO to things that aren’t a great fit, the more space you open up to receive the things that are.

15. Launching a digital course

Selling my own programs and products has been completely game-changing. It’s given me more time freedom, more income, and the ability to be very picky about the writing projects I take on.

Choose a niche, focus on excelling at something you can then teach to others, and build an audience you can sell to. This will transform your business and give you so much more freedom in life.
